As you might expect from the common name, blue-eyed grass has grass-like foliage with a purple flower. However, it is in the Iris family. Usually this six petaled flower will begin to flower in April and doesn't stop blooming until the end of July or August.
It is widely distributed in California on open, grassy slopes. It likes full to partial sun and garden water. It will become very drought tolerant (even as little as 8" of rain a year). It grows in sand to clay, coastal bluffs to interior grasslands. Cold tolerant to at least 0 as it will go winter dormant in bad years.
