COMBAT EXTREME™ Cold Climate FACT SHEET Combat Extreme™ Cold Climate grass seed has fine to medium leaf blades which allow it to form a dense turf and because it is a lower growing cultivar, mowing requirements and clipping yields can be reduced up to 30 percent. Combat Extreme™ Cold Climate grass seed establishes rapidly when soil temperatures are above 55 degrees Fahrenheit. These three varieties of turf type fescue were selected due to their ability to withstand hot summer temperatures as well as cold and harsh winters in the northern portion of the U.S. (USDA Zones 4 - 5). Combat Extreme™ Cold Climate grass seed has improved germination which allows it to establish quicker than other varieties and its lower growth habit significantly reduces the amount of top growth. It does extremely well in full sun or partial shade in USDA Zones 4 - 5 (for Zones 6 - 10 see our regular Combat Extreme blend). Combat Extreme™ Cold Climate grass has the addition of Kentucky Bluegrass for extra cold tolerance and turf density. Unlike other Tall Fescues grass seeds, Combat Extreme has the ability to repair itself. Traditional tall fescue grass seeds will clump together, not filling in the bare spots and producing an uneven lawn. With bare spots, weeds are more apt to take over the lawn. What makes Combat Extreme™ Cold Climate grass seed unique is its ability to fill in these open areas with through aggressive tillering.

Rhizing Star: Rhizing star is a new and improved, heat and disease resistant, tall fescue variety developed for suprior turf quality across a wide area of adaptation. Rhizing Star has brought turf-type tall fescues to a new level. Developed from plants selected in various regions of the United States, Rhizing Star withstands stress better than most turf-type tall fescues.

Rhizing Star turf type fescue grass is a dark green, moderately fine textured variety that exhibits excellent wear tolerance, improved turf density and resistance to Brown Patch. This turf type fescue is endophyte enhanced for added resistance to disease. Unlike most tall fescues, Rhizing Star exhibits high levels of rhizome expression, resulting in better regeneration and growth from wear and tear damage. Rhizing Star is recommend for permanent turf in full sun or partial shade lawns, golf course roughs, parks, cemeteries, etc.

Houndog 6: A new and improved heat and disease resistant tall fescue developed for superior turf quality across a wide area of adaptation. Houndog 6 is very dark green, moderately fine textured with excellent wear tolerance. Houndog 6 is an endophyte enhanced tall fescue with >90% Neotyphodium coenophialum endophyte which provides resistance to a number of leaf and crown feeding insects and nematodes. The presence of endophyte also contributes to improved biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, improved seedling establishment, enhanced spring/fall recovery and reduced summer/winter annual weed invasion.

Houndog 5 tied for first in the 96-13 NTEP Final Report tall fescue trial conducted at 47 US and Canadian locations (Houndog 6 has improved from that). Houndog 6 was developed for the discriminating superintendent for use in a range of environments. Houndog 6 can be utilized from the dry temperate climates of southern California to the hot and humid regions of the southeastern US with excellent results. Houndog 6 exhibits improved resistance to large brown patch, pythium blight and winter net blotch.

Solara: Solara is a new and improved, heat and disease resistant tall fescue variety developed for superior turf quality across a wide area of adaptation. Solara is a very dark green, moderately fine textured tall fescue with excellent wear tolerance. Solara is an endophyte enhanced tall fescue with >30 percent A. coenophialum endophyte which provides resistance to a number of leaf and crown feeding insects and nematodes. The presence of endophyte also contributes to improved biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, faster seedling establishment, enhanced spring/fall recovery and reduced summer/winter annual weed invasion.

Appalachian Kentucky Bluegrass - Probably the most outstanding feature of Appalachian Kentucky bluegrass is its unusually dark blue-green color giving it a rich color even under low maintenance conditions. Its high tiller density provides a thick carpet that will stand up to the abuses of athletic fields and high traffic. Sod producers and homeowners alike will enjoy Appalachian's dwarf growth characteristics which result in fewer mowings and lower maintenance costs. This outstanding cultivar shows good resistance to leaf spot and stem rust, stripe smut and dollar spot. University trials have documented Appalachian's heat and drought tolerance. Kentucky Bluegrass is recommended for use on athletic fields, golf courses, sod blends, parks, professional landscaped, and home lawns areas where Kentucky bluegrass is adapted.

Probably the most outstanding feature of Kentucky bluegrass is its extreme cold tolerance. That is why we have added it to our regular Combat Extreme blend for the USDA Zones 4- 5 where cold tolerance can be of the utmost importance. Its high tiller density provides a thick carpet that will stand up to the abuses of athletic fields and high traffic. Bluegrass blends well with turf type fescue and makes it softer in appearance and more dense. This outstanding cultivar shows good resistance to leaf spot and stem rust, stripe smut and dollar spot. Appalachian Kentucky bluegrass was also developed with quick establishment in mind. It is wear tolerant and repairs itself by rhizomes and tillering improving its turf density.
