Let nutrients into your lawn with our do-it-yourself Spike Lawn Aerator
The push spike lawn aerator uses a series of rotating, star-shaped, tines that slice into the soil to allow seed, fertilizer, water, air, light and nutrients to reach the grass roots. Lawn aerating should be done when the lawn's moisture content is high.
Spike lawn aerators are the easiest and least expensive aeration method (except for liquid lawn aerators) and is done by using a solid tine or a metal spike and putting an angular hole in the ground. Using the spike lawn aerator method, the turf heals quicker than with core aeration because no soil is being removed. Use can use a spike lawn aerator anytime of the year. But the effects of the solid tine method are short term. Another problem is that the soil is pushed to the sides of the hole compacting the area again. Using a liquid lawn aerator is a better form of lawn aeration.
Using a lawn aerator helps to insure that air and water get down to the root zone. It is especially helpful during extremely dry and extremely wet conditions. For example, during periods of heavy rainfall, aerating allows air to penetrate deeply into the soil to dry up excess moisture. Using a lawn aerator also helps to reduce thatch. The extracted soil cores contain microorganisms that "feed" on dead and decaying plant material (thatch). When the microorganisms come in direct contact with the thatch layer, they break it down, releasing valuable nutrients back into the soil. Therefore, it is important to use a lawn aerator.
