Butterfly Bush (Buddleia Davidii Violet) - Butterfly Bush, also known as Summer Lilac, is a butterfly-attracting, aromatic bush that has narrow branches supporting lilac-like clusters of blossoms a foot or two in length, with side branches and blossoms. You might even attract a hummingbird or two to this sweet-scented perennial bush. Butterfly Bush readily establishes from flower seed, and its growth rate is considered to be fast and vigorous. Sow Butterfly Bush flower seed indoors several weeks before the last frost. Transplant the seedlings after danger of frost has passed. After the Butterfly Bush is established from flower seed, some general care would include following a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Cut back hard in early spring, flowers in summer on new growth. Some gardeners also do a light shearing in the summer to keep the blooms coming in the fall. If the winter is hard enough, the plant can die back to the ground. If it doesn't, each spring (prior to new growth) the bush should be trimmed to 10 inches. The plant will bloom on the new growth and will have fuller, larger blooms. Once established, the bush prefers a slightly moist to dry soil, and is drought tolerant.
