Hosta (Hosta Sieboldiana) - Grow this lovely addition to the shade garden from Hosta flower seeds! In addition to making great groundcovers in shady areas and excellent foundation plantings along northern foundations that receive little sun, some Hostas are large enough and showy enough to use as specimen plants, and this is one! This Hosta produces large rounded-heart shaped leaves with an attractive puckered surface, in a soft blue green color. Early summer brings trumpet shaped blossoms, in white with a hint of lavender, that attract hummingbirds and may be used as cut flowers. Happiest in partial to full shade. This Hosta plant resists slug damage well.
Growing Hostas from flower seed is a simple procedure. Hosta seeds sprout nicely indoors, under normal house conditions, with temperatures running 60 - 70F. Use a "peaty" starter mix and just lightly cover the seed with peat moss. Keep the seed moist but not saturated until germination. Sow seeds 8 - 10 weeks before frost season ends.
