Love-in-a-Mist (Nigella Damascena Jewels Indigo) - Grow this unusual but very attractive little gem from Nigella seeds. Love In A Mist has lovely indigo blooms which reach up to 2 1/2 inches across. Once the blooms are done, equally attractive seed pods form once the blooms dry. The foliage of the Love-In-A-Mist plant is lacy and fern-like giving the plant an airy feel. The indigo colored flower is great to use as a cut flower, and the seed pods are great to use in arrangements once dried. To dry the flower, cut the stem and hang upside down in cool location.

Sow Nigella seeds outdoors in early spring. The flower seed can be lightly covered with soil. Each plant has a short bloom season, so it is best to have successive plantings of the seeds every three weeks to have blooms all season. Thin the seedlings to 6 inches between plants, and the plants should start blooming in three months. Deadheading will promote continued blooming of Nigella flowers, but will eliminate the attractive seed pods that form later. This annual is a ready self-seeder if you leave the seed pods on. In mild climates, this indigo colored flower will bloom continuously.
