Buffalo Supreme Buffalo Grass Seed

Buffalo Supreme Grass Seed

Buffalo Supreme grass seed is a two-way blend of Cody and Bowie buffalo grasses. This Buffalo Supreme grass blend is comprised of two leading buffalo grasses on the market today designed to create a better turf density. Buffalo Supreme grass seed can be used for natural looking golf course roughs, roadside plantings, airport landscaping, parkland, and of course home lawn where low maintenance is desired. In fact, Buffalo Supreme grass seed can be left unmowed and will only reach a maximum height of approximately 6 inches.

This Buffalo Supreme grass blend is dense enough to reduce weed encroachment, due to its excellent stolon development and some rhizomes which spread across the ground to create new buffalo grass and keep weeds out. However, if you are looking for a prairie meadow look and want to add wildflowers to your buffalo grass blend; no problem! You do not have to mow buffalo grass; however, mowing once or twice a year to remove old growth in early spring or late summer, will produce the best results and keep these low maintenance areas looking their best. For greater turf density, mow more frequently. The more you mow, the more dense the turf becomes and will produce a fairly dense sod and a high quality turf that is extremely drought and heat tolerant.

Cody Buffalo Grass

Cody Buffalo grass is rapidly becoming the standard by which buffalo grass is measured. Etablishing itself as a premier warm season turfgrass. Faster establishment, higher density, lower growth rate, excellent winter hardiness, low water requirement, darker color, fine texture and a wide area of adaptation give Cody the edge as the choice for low maintenance areas. Cody buffalograss is a grass well suited for conditions of drought, high heat, high winds, and cool winters. It is a rugged grass that grows well in loam and clay soils, and not well in sandy soils. Buffalo grass is so low maintenance that some people will often only mow it a few times, or even not at all during the year.

Buffalo grass will grow best at elevations lower than about 6,500 feet and in very sunny areas. Cody buffalo grass is a turf-type seeded buffalo grass developed for a diverse range of climates and geographical regions. Cody is an aggressive low maintenance, dense, fine textured buffalograss that can be established from seed. Cody excels in ease of establishment and has a broad area of adaptation.

Cody's unique development utilizing the elite seeded entries in the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program will allow it to excel in turfgrass quality over a wide range of climates and locations. Cody has shown significant improvement over other seeded varieties, particularly in the ability to establish quickly. Turfgrass quality exceeds most commercially available seeded varieties.

Developed specifically for turf quality, Bowie possesses medium green color, fine leaf texture, good turf density, and low growth habit. Bowie has improved lateral growth for quicker establishment. Bowie has a wide range of adaptation extending across the entire country. Prior to its release in 2001, Bowie buffalo grass seed was ranked number one for turfgrass quality among seeded varieties at 28 locations. Bowie has shown genetic stability by performing well consistently across years and locations.

  • Seeding rate: 2 - 3 lbs seed/1,000 sq. ft. into a firm seed bed
  • Seeding depth: 0.25 to 0.5 inches deep
  • Keep soil moist through emergence
  • Apply 0.75 lb N/1,000 sq. ft. with starter fert.

  • 2 to 4 inches for home lawns
  • Low maintenance areas may be mowed taller or not at all
  • Frequency is affected by amount of watering and fertilizer
  • Avoid removing more than one-third the turf height at any one mowing
  • Deep soak with no less than 1 inch once a month from July to September for higher maintenance areas, depending on natural precipitation.
  • Soak soil before winter if soil is dry
  • Occasional or no watering for low maintenance areas
  • Keep buffalo grass seed moist until it germinates
  • First application - 3 weeks after green up
  • Second application - 8 weeks later
  • 1 to 3 lbs actual nitrogen/1,000 sq. ft/season
  • Less on low maintenance and natural areas
  • Use higher rates for best quality
  • Avoid frequent watering, short mowing and over fertilization
  • Minimize early season watering
  • Control broadleaf weeds in the fall and/or spring
  • Apply pre-emergent in the spring for grassy weeds
  • Don't use a pre-emergent if planting buffalo grass seed
  • Many cool season weeds can be controlled with Round-up when buffalograss is dormant. Round-up must be applied prior to buffalograss breaking dormancy in spring.
