Gazania Rigens

Gazania (Gazania Rigens New Day Yellow) - Grown from Gazania seeds, this little gem is a reliable performer that you'll want year after year as as bedding plant, a ground cover, in pots on the patio, and in window boxes as well. Gazania Treasure Flower boasts 4 inch bright yellow colored flowers on a compact 8 - 10 inch plant which will also spread 6 - 8 inches. It is gorgeous when grown as a ground cover plant and quickly fills in an empty area with lovely yellow flowers.

Gazania rigens is a native of South Africa. In a frost-free climate, they will grow as perennials. In colder climates, they can be grown as an annual, and they will have flowers in 12 weeks after starting the flower seeds. Treasure Flowers bloom profusely from summer through fall in cooler climates and fall, winter and spring in hot climates.

If growing Gazania seeds in colder climates, start the flower seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Treasure Flower seeds should be pressed into the soil but not covered and kept moist but not saturated until germination occurs. After germination of the flower seeds, reduce watering and grow seedlings in a sunny window location. For warm climates, start the Gazania seeds directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed. Space the ground cover seed 8 - 12 inches apart in the seedbed.

Gazania care includes deadheading the spent flowers to promote the growth of more blooms. Also, Gazania plants benefit from an application of a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season or mix in a slow-release fertilizer at the time of transplanting or preparing the seedbed. Water Gazania Treasure Flower plants slowly and deeply and let them dry out in-between waterings as they do not need much water since they are resistant to drought.  Applying an organic mulch around the base of the Gazania plants helps to hold moisture in.

Gazania Splendens

\

Gazania (Gazania Splendens) - Easily grown from Gazania seeds, this incredible little flower is a delight all summer long! Gazania, or Treasure Flower as it's commonly called, is a hardy little plant that makes a wonderful ground cover. It is covered with large 3 - 4 inch blooms ranging in colors of red, yellow, orange, white and pink. Gazania drought tolerant ground cover plants will bloom 12 weeks after sowing the ground cover seed! You just can't improve upon these huge blooms, glowing with bright color, that completely cover the small plants. They reach 8 inches tall and spread 10 inches wide. Gazania Treasure Flower has a lot to brag about as a ground cover plant! With large, showy flowers, an early and long bloom season, and ultra-tolerant low, rapidly spreading foliage, you will want to sow the Treasure Flower seeds in your garden!

Hardy in zones 8 - 10, Gazania ground cover plants are a fabulous long-season annual elsewhere. Start Gazania seeds indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost, or sow the ground cover seeds directly outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. They make a great permanent ground cover in areas where they are perennial -- particularly southern California and the deep South!

Gazania (Gazania Rigens Kiss Orange) - Perfect as a ground cover, Gazania ground cover seeds grow quickly and the plants bloom profusely! Gazania Treasure Flower boasts 3 inch orange flowers on a compact 10 inch plant which will also spread 10 inches. Gazania flowers are held above the basal foliage, forming a bright carpet of orange when planted as a ground cover plant.

Gazania Treasure Flowers are good plants for the front of sunny garden borders and also perform well as a flowering ground cover when planted in large groups. Because of their heat and drought tolerance, Kiss Gazanias are especially useful near driveways and sidewalks. They also do well in mixed container plantings, pots, baskets and window boxes as well. Gazania are known for closing their flowers at night and on cloudy days, but this Kiss series produces blooms that stay opened more so that you can enjoy them more!
