Sedum (Sedum Telephium Emperor's Wave) - This is a new Sedum variety that can be grown from ground cover seed. Emperor's Wave Sedum has succulent bluish-green pointed leaves. Its sturdy, dark stems look wonderful with the carmine flowers. The umbrella-like flower heads bloom from late summer until fall, and it has a height of 16 inches and spreads about the same amount. In fall, the flower clusters hold their form and turn brown giving interest to the fall and winter display. Emperor's Wave is a great choice for beds, borders, and it's especially stunning when planted in mass groupings. It makes a great cut flower, and it attracts butterflies and bees.
Sow Sedum ground cover seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use small pots or flats and sterile starter mix. Pre-moisten the starter mix and sow 5 - 7 Sedum ground cover seeds per container. The Sedum seed is exceptionally small, so only press the seed into the moistened soil, and do not cover the Sedum seed. Keep the seeds moist but not saturated until they germinate. If seeds do not germinate, a cold period is recommended. Place tray or pots into the refrigerator for 1 - 2 weeds, and then repeat the warm temperature again. Germination can be erratic.
Sedum Emperor's Wave plants need very little care. Trim them back in the spring to neaten their appearance. They prefer to be planted in full sun and in well-drained soil. Sedum plants will tolerate most soil types and is drought resistant once it is established.
