RUTABAGA, AMERICAN PURPLE TOP
A desirable vegetable for winter storage and table use. Large, globe shaped roots. Sweet, fine-grained yellow flesh cooks bright orange. Easy to grow. Plant vegetable seeds outdoors mid-spring to midsummer. Rich, fertile soil preferred.

A real old-timer (heirloom vegetable) that has been popular for many years. Its large roots are purple above ground and light yellow below. Tops are big and the necks are of medium size. Fine-textured and good to eat, its flesh is creamy yellow in color. Everyone’s favorite rutabaga for market sales, fresh from the field or for winter storage. Wonderful roasted, mashed or in a mix sauteed with carrots, turnips and broccoli. Roots are purple-shouldered with firm, yellow flesh. Can be stored for several months.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Sow directly in garden as early as soil can be worked. Cool weather vegetable. Plant 2 seeds every 2 inches. Thin to one plant every 2 inches when seedlings are 2 1/2- 3 inches tall. Sow again in late summer for fall crop.

PLANTING INFO/DIRECTIONS:
Greens are tastly if picked when small and tender. Pull roots when they are 4-6 inches across. Light frost improves flavor, but if roots are left in the ground over winter, mulch heavily.
