Blue sage is a type of salvia wild flower seed which is a herbaceous perennial that is commonly grown as an annual in most cold winter areas. Blue sage cultivars can be used as a stunning blue-flowered hedge which will be in bloom for months. This wildflower seed can be used at the back of a border and in combination with a great many other flowering annuals and perennials for an English cottage garden effect.
Blue sage salvia normally grows in a mound shaped from sprawling stems around 2 - 3 feet in width and height. The blue flowers are around 3/4" an inch long with 2 stamens and 1 pistil. All types of sage have an aromatic fragrance that identifies them as part of the salvia family. The long, narrow leaves grow in clusters, out of which grow the flower stems. The leaves may or may not have teeth. Tubular flowers range from dark blue to white and are densely congested in whorls along the upper stems, creating a 3 - 9 inch beautiful spike of flowers. The foliage of this salvia wild flower seed is usually a grayish green color and the leaves are quite common towards the lower half of the wildflower plant.
All salvia wildflower seed species benefit from being started indoors, but they grow fairly reliably if sown outdoors in warm soil where summers are hot. If you want to get an early jump, start these salvia wildflower seeds indoors 10 weeks before last frost. When the frost season has passed, take the blue sage wildflowers outdoors in to a sunny location. Give them plenty of water in dry weather. In the Southern half of the United States where temperatures can be extreme, this type of salvia may need light to moderate shade instead of full sun. Blue sage will do best in areas that have moderate humidity. It will not do well in areas with very low humidity. Salvia can be grown easily from wild flower seed and they all prefer warm weather.
