Fountain grass (Pennisetum orientale) - For months of enjoyable beauty, start Fountain Grass seeds and grow an ornamental grass that does well in well-drained soil and full sun. Commonly called Oriental Fountain Grass, this graceful, cascading ornamental grass is considered by some to be the most floriferous of all the grasses. Oriental Fountaingrass will quite often even bloom the first year from seed if the growing conditions are optimal. Ornamental grasses are most effective when mass planted around ponds, stream banks, and walkways. Pennisetum also makes a great container plant.
How To Grow Oriental Fountain Grass: Start Fountain Grass seeds indoors in the late winter. Use pots or trays filled with moist seed starting mix. Sow the ornamental grass seeds on the moist soil and lightly cover. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into a larger pot for continued growing. Harden the ornamental grass plants off for 10 days or more before transplanting outside once frost danger has passed. Grow pennisetum plants in full sun and in dry soil. Once established, this ornamental grass is largely maintenance-free. This plant does self-sow.
