Caraway Herb Seed

Caraway (Carum Carvi) - Enjoy the feathery, Queen Anne's Lace type foliage and flowers in the garden and the spicy seeds in your cooking. Caraway seeds are often added to breads, cakes, soups, cheeses, cabbages and other dishes to add a distinct and pungent flavor.

A biennial, the rosette of feathery leaves appears the first year, followed by large, white, lacy flowers arising on 24 inch stalks the second year. Harvest seeds after flowerheads have died and seeds have formed in the late summer or early fall. Cut stems, tie together, hang upside down with a container underneath to catch falling seeds. Store Caraway seeds in a sealed container in a dry, cool location out of direct sunlight for optimum life.

Direct sow Caraway herb seeds into prepared seed beds in spring when frost danger has passed. The first year plants look like carrots, reaching 8 inches tall, sending down a deep taproot. The second year, the plants will produce flowers.
