Bermuda grass is a major turf species for sports fields, lawns, parks, golf courses, and general utility turfs in Australia, Africa, India, South America and the Southern region of the United States. In the United States the distribution of bermuda grass extends from New Jersey and Maryland southward to Florida and westward to Kansas and Texas. Under irrigation its distribution extends westward to southern New Mexico, Arizona and to most major valleys in California. The development of more cold tolerant turf-type varieties such as Yukon has increased interest in the species near its northern limits. Low winter temperature is the factor that limits the northward distribution of bermuda grass.

Known as one of the most persistent and aggressive grasses grown it is very hard to kill Bermuda grass after establishment. It germinates quickly from seed, covers quickly and grows in a variety of soils. With a fair degree salt spray tolerance, it is used in coastal regions all along the south and up to the lower sections of the cool season area. One of the best qualities of this grass is the degree of growth that can be achieved through good management practices. This is highly desirable on golf courses and athletic fields where heavy traffic damages occur daily.
