Butterfly Weed flower seed is another butterfly-attracting plant with orange to red flowers that are hardy and drought resistant. Being a member of the milkweed family, Butterfly Weed will attract the Monarch butterfly as well as other butterfly varieties. The blooms are followed by seed pods 4 to 5 inches long containing the seeds with their long silky hairs. The plant will die back to the root crown each winter, and it is slow to emerge in the spring.
Direct sow or begin seeds indoors. Seeds need a cold treatment before germinating. This can be done by either planting outside in the fall, or placing the seeds in the freezer for a few weeks before planting.
