Direct sow sunflower flower seeds in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. Can be sown as late as 100 days before killing frost. Requires full sun, adapted to a wide range of soil types, but prefers well drained soil with a ph range between 6.5 - 7.5. Fertilizer should coincide with plants needs & general health. If needed apply fertilizer at a rate of 2 - 21/2 lbs of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. as a side dressing before the plants reach 1 foot in height. These easy-to-grow sunflowers should be thinned to 18 - 24 inches apart and sown after the last frost. Attracting birds and butterflies, this sunflower produces a central stalk and bloom up to 12 inches and then several side shoots each with their own blooms.
