Sedum (Sedum Spathulifolium) - For beginner gardeners, this is a beautiful and easy ground cover to grow. Sedum ground cover plants easily establish from ground cover seeds, and they do well if grown in well-drained soil and a sunny to partial shade setting. When it comes to Sedum ground covers, there are many choices. If you like a yellow flowering ground cover plant, than this Oregon native, Sedum Spathulifolium, is one of the most well-known Stonecrops in cultivation. This Sedum is marked by handsome rosettes of succulent grey-green leaves which are covered with a silvery-white waxy powder. The yellow flowers are quite attractive, but the foliage is so outstanding that many people prefer not to have the flowers detract from the wonderful silvery rosettes of this Sedum. When the flowers begin to fade, it is a good idea to prune out the flowering stems so the foliage becomes the focus of interest again.
Sedum has tiny seeds which should be mixed with finest sand or talcum for an even sowing. Sow Sedum ground cover seed indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use small pots or flats and sterile starter mix. Pre-moisten the starter mix and sow Sedum ground cover seeds on the surface. Press the seed into the moistened soil, and do not cover the Sedum seed. Keep the seeds moist but not saturated until they germinate. Water from the underside of the pots or use a spray bottle and lightly mist the seeds.
