Melica Ornamental Grass

Melica Transsilvania (Red Spire) - This is yet another fine ornamental grass bearing in early summer long, satiny spires of red spikelets. Useful in arrangements either fresh or dried. The first year of establishment it will grow to approximately 2 1/2 feet. The following year it should grow to its maintenance height of 5 - 6 feet. Ideal for rear of borders and landscape planting, flowers in first year from early sowing.

Best sowing method is to use 3 - 5 seeds to create 1 - 1 1/2" plugs then sow directly into final pots. Seeds should germinate in 6 - 10 days at temperatures between 64 - 72°F. Needs darkness to germinate. Cover the seeds lightly and keep soil moist but not wet. Five to seven weeks after sowing transplant 3 - 4 plants into a pot 4 - 5". Sandy humus soil with grit works best. Melica prefers acidic soil with a pH value betweetn 4.5 - 6.0.
