Bent Awn Plume Grass (Erianthus contortus) - Bent Awn Plume Grass is a showy ornamental that can be grown from Plume Grass seeds. This unique, tall grass is native to the southeastern portion of the United States, and it is known for its spectacular plumes in late summer as well as its great fall color display with colors including purples, bronze, orange and reds! Sometimes this grass is called Bend Feather Grass or Bent Feather Grass, and a synonymous botanical name is Saccharum contortum.
Start Bent Awn Plume Grass seed indoors in late winter. Using a seed starting tray filled with a pre-moistened seed starting medium that drains well, place the ornamental grass seeds on top of the soil and gently press the seeds in. Keep the seeds moist until germination occurs. Plant Bent-Awn Plume Grass out after danger of frost has passed in the spring. This ornamental grass does well with full sun or light shade, and it likes moist garden soils and tolerates clay and poor drainage. Mature height is approximately 3 feet with plumes rising to 6 feet.
