Setaria macrocheaeta (Setaria italica Macrocheata) - Grow Setaria italica seeds for a vigorous, robust annual millet that has many uses. Known as Foxtail Millet, Setaria Macrocheata is used in dried and fresh cut flower arrangements to give vertical accent. This ornamental grass is easily grown and reaches a height of 28 inches in no time. The large 3 - 4 inch seed heads are fluffy and very ornamental in the latter part of summer. If the seed heads are allowed to mature and ripen, the millet grass will attract wildlife to the landscape. In addition to wildlife, the ripened seed heads are a wonderful tasty treat for hamsters and other pets.
How To Grow Foxtail Millet From Ornamental Grass Seeds: Start ornamental millet seeds indoors in early spring. Cover the Setaria italica seeds lightly and keep them moist. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, separate them out and grow them individually in their own pot. Once frost danger has passed the Foxtail Millet grass can be transplanted outside. In areas with a long growing season, Foxtail Millet seeds can be started directly outdoors after frost danger has passed. However, with a later start, the seed heads may not mature completely in the early fall to attract wildlife.
