Start Swiss Chard seeds and enjoy this red variety that is full of nutritious value. It contains 13 different polyphenol antioxidants including the cardio-protective flavonoid, kaempferol. It also contains an additional flavonoid called syringic acid which has had quite a large amount of current research done due to its properties that help regulate blood sugar. In addition to the antioxidants, Swiss Chard herb has vitamins E and K, along with magnesium, manganese and potassium.
This variety, Ruby Red, is quite striking with dark green leaves and bright red stems and veins. It is a hardy plant and related to the beet. Position Red Swiss Chard herbs in full sun. They thrives in soil that has had organic matter added. It is recommended to add a couple of inches of compost to the soil a few weeks before planting the Swiss Chard seeds. Work the compost into about 6 inches of soil, and the Swiss Chard herb will have the nutrition that it needs. Harvest can be in 50 to 60 days after planting the herb seeds.
