Quick Facts About Alternanthera
Alternanthera Purple Knight has some of the darkest foliage available in any plant species. The foliage actually gets darker and more beautiful the hotter it gets! This heat loving annual is easily established from seeds.
Planting Time
Indoors, grow in loam-based potting compost (No. 2) in full light. In the growing season, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly; in winter, water sparingly and keep well ventilated. Outdoors, plant out after any risk of frost has passed.
Planting Location
Grow full sun for best leaf color, or can be grown in partial shade.
How to Plant Alternanthera
- Prepare trays with seed starting mix or a well draining potting soil - we recommend a loam-based potting compost (No. 2)
- Sow 3 - 4 seeds per cell in starter trays.
- Press seeds gently into the loosened soil surface, do not cover seed.
- Keep soil moist until germination.
- Place trays in bright warm location 60 - 85 degrees.
- When seedlings reach about 4 inches tall they are ready to transplant outside.
- Before transplanting be sure to take time and harden off the seedlings.
- Space or transplant 18 - 24 inches apart.
Care And Maintenance
- Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during summer.
- Prune to maintain the desired size and shape.
