Candytuft ground cover plants can be annuals, perennials or evergreen. They form a low-growing, colorful mat of color and make a very effective edging along walkways and terrace margins. Bees and butterflies love the sweet flowers. Candytuft is especially good in rock gardens and in xeriscape landscapes.
Planting Time
Start Candytuft ground cover seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the end of frost season or the seeds can be sown outside once frost danger has passed.
Planting Location
Candytuft plants thrive in full sun and in soil that drains well. It's perfect for edging walkways and the front of the border.
How to Plant Candytuft
- Start Candytuft seeds in starter trays
- Light is needed for germination press the seed into the soil but do not cover
- Keep the seed continually moist for germination
- Plastic wrap can loosely cover the trays to help hold in moisture
- One seedlings appear, remove the plastic wrap
- Place in bright window or under grow lights for continued growing
- Make sure to harden off the seedlings 7 - 10 days prior to planting out
- Or, work the soil to a depth of 6 - 8 inches
- Add compost to improve drainage
- Firm the soil and scatter the ground cover seeds on the soil and press them in
- Keep the seed consistently and evenly moist
- Thin to strongest plant every 8 - 10 inches apart
Care And Maintenance
- Candytuft ground cover plants will need consistent irrigation for establishment
- Once established, the plants will be drought and heat tolerant
- After blooming, trim back to keep a bushy growth habit and promote more flowers
- Candytuft can self-sow if the seedheads are left
