Quick Facts About Datura Metel
Datura Metel is a sprawling, tender perennial that produces short-lived dramatic blooms. Flowers emerge from cigar-shaped buds, and the plant will bloom intermittently from summer until frost. This plant is related to the toxic nightshade, and should not be ingested.
Planting Time
These seeds can be started indoors 8-10 weeks before last expected frost, or directly outdoors in the spring after all frost danger has passed (or in the fall in warmer climates).

Planting Location
Datura Metel should be grown in an area of full sun in soil that is rich and well-drained.

How to Grow Datura Metel
- Prior to sowing, prepare these seeds by soaking them overnight in tepid water.
- If starting indoors, sow the seeds into small pots filled with a sterile starter mix.
- For direct sowing, first prepare a seedbed by removing weeds and breaking up soil.
- Sow 1-2 seeds per plant at a depth of 1/4 inch.
- Keep seeds moist until germination. Ideal germination temperature is warm, at 70-80F degrees. Under proper conditions, seeds should germinate in 2-4 weeks, but can sometimes take longer.
- Established seedlings can be transplanted into the garden once frost danger has passed. In the final growing location, space plants 3 feet apart.
- Before transplanting seedlings into the garden, it's essential to "harden them off". This involves acclimating young plants to outdoor conditions by placing them in a sheltered outdoor area for about a week. Initially, shield them from strong winds and direct sunlight. If there's a risk of frost overnight, either cover the plants or bring them indoors, then return them outside in the morning. This hardening off method helps strengthen the plant's cell structure, minimizing transplant shock and sun damage.

Care And Maintenance
- Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
- Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
- Datura Metel cannot tolerate frost, and should be brought indoors if you want it to survive cold winters.
- Water regularly during the growing season, but ambient moisture and rain is enough to sustain this plant during the cool season.
- Datura Metel benefits from a light application of flowering fertilizer during the growing season.
- Staking may be necessary for weaker stems and excessive growth. Trim stray stems as needed, but pruning is otherwise unnecessary.
