Orach Planting Guide

Quick Facts About Orach

Orach is a beautiful herb that grows into an edible landscape. It is commonly referred to as Garden Orache, Red Orach, Mountain Spinach, or French Spinach. This Red Plume variety is also highly ornamental and prized for its red coloring.

Planting Time

Plant directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed.

Planting Location

Plant in full sun with well drained, sandy to loamy, soil.

How to Plant Orach

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden, after the risk of frost has passed, by surface sowing and thinly covering seeds.
  • Presoak seeds overnight before planting 2 - 3 seeds per cell or plant.
  • Space plants 15 inches apart in garden.

Care And Maintenance

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
  • Water consistently, and add a layer of mulch around the plant base to keep the soil from drying out.
  • Orach takes around 40 - 60 days to reach maturity. Harvest from the beginning of summer until the beginning of frosts in autumn. Harvest by pinching off leaves once they reach a usable size, leaving the old leaves to support new growth.
