Common Questions
What are common pest problems with society garlic?
When grown outdoors, society garlic plants typically do not attract insects. However, those cultivated in greenhouses or kept indoors during winter may draw aphids or whiteflies. To address these pest issues, use a strong spray of water to rinse the plant and apply insecticidal soap. Additionally, to deter soft-bodied pests, sprinkle a layer of crushed eggshells or another gritty substance around the base of outdoor plants.
Do I need to fertilize my society garlic plants?
To enhance drainage and promote blooming, incorporate two to three inches of organic compost or a general-purpose fertilizer into the soil annually in early spring.
How much water should I use caring for my plants?
Water your plants gradually and thoroughly, especially during potential droughts in spring or summer. Be cautious not to overwater, as tubers can easily rot when planted in excessively wet or soggy soil. For optimal growth, garlic plants should be watered consistently throughout their growing season, allowed to dry out a bit while blooming, and nearly completely dried out during their winter dormancy.
What are some ways to use society garlic plants around my landscape?
These can be stunning in sunny borders, beds, rock gardens, cottage gardens, herb gardens or has edging plants best planted in groups. They also do well in containers.

Leptosiphon Mix (Leptosiphon Hybrida French Hybrids Mix) - Start Leptosiphon seeds to start these dainty little flowers. Leptosiphon French Hybrids has the synonymous botanical name Linanthus androsaceus. This low-growing annual has fern-like foliage and hundreds of sweet little half inch star-shaped flowers that shine out from the foliage. The colors are mixed and bright in shades of rose, yellow, orange and cream. Leptosiphon uses include edging the front of the flower bed, containers, edging a pathway, or as a ground cover. Commonly known as False Baby Stars, this annual is lovely if it is allowed to spill over the edges of rocks or containers. It makes a carpet of color and is stunning!
Grow Leptosiphon seeds directly outside in a prepared seedbed after frost danger has passed. Press the flower seed into the soil and lightly cover. False Baby Stars flowers perform best in full sun, and they prefer rich, well-draining soil.
