Planting Instructions for Christmas Rose Seeds

Christmas Rose Planting and Care Guide

Quick Facts About Christmas Rose

Christmas Rose is a unique, evergreen perennial that blooms during winter. Due to its cool-season preference, it grows best in partial shade. Christmas Rose seeds require a considerable cold treatment in order to germinate successfully.

Planting Time

Christmas Rose seeds can be sown both indoors and outdoors in the fall, but should be given a cold treatment beforehand if planting indoors.

Planting Location

Christmas Rose grows best in partial shade, and requires soil that drains well. It is also best to plant it where it is sheltered from bitter winter winds.

How to Plant Christmas Rose

  • In the fall, if starting indoors, first freeze the seeds for 3-6 weeks in order to break dormancy. This can be accomplished either by placing the seeds in the freezer, or planting them in pots and leaving them outdoors for a month during the winter
  • Surface sow 5 seeds per plant into small pots filled with a seed-starting compost. Cover with a thin layer of perlite or grit. If naturally stratifying, leave the pots in winter weather for a month, and then bring indoors to continue growing.
  • If sowing outdoors, first prepare a seedbed by weeding and breaking up soil. Plant seeds in the fall, and the cold temperatures will help the seeds germinate.
  • Keep seeds moist until germination. Patience is needed, as germination can take 1-2 months.
  • Once seedlings have their first sets of true leaves, thin to strongest seedling and plant 1-2 feet apart in the garden, or thin to strongest seedling per pot for indoor growing.
  • If replanting indoor seedlings outdoors, it's essential to "harden them off". This involves acclimating young plants to outdoor conditions by placing them in a sheltered outdoor area for about a week. Initially, shield them from strong winds and direct sunlight. If there's a risk of frost overnight, either cover the plants or bring them indoors, then return them outside in the morning. This hardening off method helps strengthen the plant's cell structure, minimizing transplant shock and sun damage.

Care And Maintenance

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
  • Christmas Rose is drought-tolerant once established, and shouldn't be overwatered. However, if grown in a sunnry area, more watering will be needed. Avoid getting leaves wet.
  • This plant does best in rich soil, so amend poor soil with compost. Adding gravelly material will also assist with proper drainage.
  • Note that this perennial may require 2-3 years of growth before it begins blooming.
