Planting Instructions for Cigar Plant Seeds

Cigar Plant Planting and Care Guide

Quick Facts About Cigar Plant

Cigar Plant is a tender perennial that flowers continuously once established. However, it grows quickly, and be grown as an annual in regions that experience cold winters. Its blooms are cylindrical, resembling tiny cigars.

Planting Time

Cigar Plant seeds should be started indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost, or directly outdoors after all frost danger has passed.

Planting Location

Plant Cigar Plant in full sun or partial shade, and grow in humus-rich soil that drains well.

How to Grow Cigar Plant

  • If starting indoors, use trays or small pots filled with a sterile seed starter mix. Sow seeds 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • If sowing outdoors, first prepare a seedbed by weeding and breaking up soil. Plant seeds after all danger of frost has passed.
  • Surface sow 3-4 seeds per plant, and press into soil. Leave uncovered, as light is required for germination.
  • Keep seeds moist and around 70F degrees until germination, which should occur in 1-2 weeks under proper conditions.
  • Once seedlings have their first sets of true leaves, thin to strongest seedling and plant 1-2 feet apart in the garden or in individual pots.
  • Before transplanting seedlings into the garden, it's essential to "harden them off". This involves acclimating young plants to outdoor conditions by placing them in a sheltered outdoor area for about a week. Initially, shield them from strong winds and direct sunlight. If there's a risk of frost overnight, either cover the plants or bring them indoors, then return them outside in the morning. This hardening off method helps strengthen the plant's cell structure, minimizing transplant shock and sun damage.

Care And Maintenance

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
  • Cigar Plant should be evenly watered (without making the soil soggy) until established, after which it is fairly drought-tolerant.
  • This plant does best in rich soil, so amend poor soil with compost. Adequate drainage is important. Fertilize regularly to maintain constant blooms.
