Planting Instructions for Cobaea Seeds

Cobaea Planting and Care Guide

Quick Facts About Cobaea

Cobaea Scandens is a perennial climbing vine that is native to Mexico and tropical South America. It can grow up to 10-20 feet within a single growing season, reaching a typical length of 30-40 feet in optimal conditions.

Planting Time

Cobaea is cold-sensitive, and is best started indoors 6-8 weeks before the end of frost season.

Planting Location

Cobaea grows best in full sun, and should be planted in moist but well-draining soil.

How to Grow Cobaea Scandens

  • Cobaea seeds can be planted outdoors in the fall in a coldframe, but they are best started indoors.
  • Before planting, soak the seeds for a few hours in tepid water.
  • Sow these seeds into small pots filled with a quality seed compost.
  • Sow 1-2 seeds per plant, inserting them vertically into the soil. Lightly cover with soil or perlite.
  • Cover pots with plastic wrap to retain moisture. Keep seeds moist until germination and maintain a temperature of 60-70F degrees. Under proper conditions, germination will occur in 3-4 weeks.
  • Once seedlings appear, transplant in larger pots and stake to provide structure. Established seedlings can be transplanted outdoors once frost danger has passed.
  • Before transplanting seedlings into the garden, it's essential to "harden them off". This involves acclimating young plants to outdoor conditions by placing them in a sheltered outdoor area for about a week. Initially, shield them from strong winds and direct sunlight. If there's a risk of frost overnight, either cover the plants or bring them indoors, then return them outside in the morning. This hardening off method helps strengthen the plant's cell structure, minimizing transplant shock and sun damage.

Care And Maintenance

  • Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
  • Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
  • Cobaea should receive consistent waterings during the growing season, not allowing the soil to completely dry out.
  • Apply fertilizer minimally, as rich soil will result in fewer blooms from Cobaea.
  • Make sure to provide a structure for Cobaea to climb, and trim its vines as desired to confine its aggressive growth.
