Crown Vetch Planting and Care Guide
Quick Facts About Crown Vetch
Crown Vetch is an aggressive ground cover that survives as a perennial down to USDA Zone 4. It produces dainty pink-to-white flowers, and it serves well for erosion control.
Planting Time
Crown Vetch is slow to germinate, and should be planted at least 10 weeks before the first expected hard frost in order to allow it time to establish.
Planting Location
Crown Vetch grows best in full sun, but can tolerate partial shade. Grow it in an area that drains well, as soggy soil can cause this plant to rot.
How to Grow Crown Vetch
- Crown Vetch seeds require preparation prior to sowing. Soak the seeds in hot (nearly boiling) water for a few hours to soften the seed coat, or nick them with sandpaper.
- For bulk planting outdoors, uniformly broadcast seed over a prepared (weeded and broken up) planting area, then cover with 1/2 inch of mulch. Sow 1 lb of seed per 1,000 sq. ft., or 5-15 lbs per acre.
- Seeds should be sown once temperatures have reached 60F degrees. Ideally plant as soon as warm temperatures arrived, but you can also sow in late summer for fall germination. Under proper conditions, germination should occur in 3-5 weeks.
Care And Maintenance
- Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
- Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
- Water plants regularly, but avoid waterlogging the soil.
- Fertilization is unnecessary, and Crown Vetch grows fine in poor soil, but application of an organic compost can be beneficial.
- Established plants should be mowed in the fall, followed by a 2-inch thick application of mulch for overwintering.
