Partridge Pea Planting Guide
Quick Facts About Partridge Pea
Partridge Pea is a versatile annual, perfect for a meadow or xeriscape garden. The flowers are a good source of nectar for bees and butterflies, and the pods produce flower seed which is a major food source for game birds and songbirds.
Planting Time
Plant directly outdoors from late winter (February) to late spring (May).
Planting Location
Plant in full sun with sand, loam, gravel, or clay.
How to Plant Partridge Pea
- Sow seeds directly into the garden at a depth of 1/4 inch from late winter to late spring.
- A cold treatment of the seeds is recommended prior to planting. Do this by refrigerating seeds for 30 days. This is helpful in aiding germination.
- Plant 1/2 lb per 1,000 square feet.
- Space plants 3 feet apart, if planting in rows.
Care And Maintenance
- Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
- Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
- Water occasionally, but do not overwater.
- In the spring, remove any weeds, small brush, and old sod. This will expose the soil so that the flower seeds that have been self-sown can come in good contact with it.
