Sweet Woodruff Planting Guide
Quick Facts About Sweet Woodruff
Sweet Woodruff is also known as Our Lady's Lace. It's an herb plant that has whorled leaves and small vanilla-scented white flowers in the spring. It makes a great groundcover plant as it has a low-growing nature and spreading habit.
Planting Time
Start directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed in late winter or first of spring while frosts are still expected.
Planting Location
Plant in partial shade in rich, porous, and moist soil. Planting near trees, where tree roots or rocks are close to the soil surface, is a preference of Sweet Woodruff.
How to Plant Sweet Woodruff
- Provide a period of cold temperatures by dampening peat moss, mix the seeds into the moss and place the mixture in the refrigerator for 2 - 4 weeks before sowing.
- Alternatively to the above method, sow seeds directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed in late winter or first of spring while frosts are still expected.
- Plant 4 - 5 seeds per cell or plant.
- Space plants 9 - 12 inches apart in garden.
Care And Maintenance
- Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or use a mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating.
- Mulches play a vital role in preserving soil moisture and ensuring consistent soil temperatures. When it comes to annuals, using organic mulch made from shredded leaves not only enhances the appearance of the bed but also enriches the soil as it decomposes over time. Remember to keep mulch away from the plant stems to avoid potential rot issues.
- Sweet Woodruff like moist conditions, and when given enough water it will grow to a nice low height of around 8 inches. If it begins to wilt, provide mulch and additional water.
- Pruning isn't necessary for the Sweet Woodruff. However if you want to keep it contained to a certain area, cut it back. Or if it becomes too thick, thin it out by pruning.
