Dahlia Variabilis

Dahlia (Dahlia Variabilis Sunny Reggae) - One of the nicest flowers you can come across in any flower garden or a vase. Sunny Reggae Dahlia is a gift that every gardener deserves. It sets big, semi-double 3 1/4 inch daisies in every shade of yellow, gold, orange, orange, and light red that you can imagine. And this' Dahlia does it all on a compact plant you never have to stake.

Sunny Reggae Dahlia is an open-pollinated variety that pollinators will adore as much as you do. The tightly-packed, slender petals surround a frilly orange-amber cone, and often included a little ruff of short petals in another shade entirely. No two flowers will be just alike, creating instant interest in even a small bouquet or planting. The blooms begin in midsummer and will go right up to frost, often increasing in number and size in the cooler fall weather.

Some gardeners are wary of Dahlias because of the work involved with staking these weak-stemmed plants, but 'Sunny Reggae' Dahlia is so compact and self-branching that all you have to do is stand back and admire the blooms. This Dahlia reaches just 20 to 24 inches high and no more than 18 inches wide. Give it sunshine (full in the north, part in the south and southwest), food, and any good garden soil, and this beautiful Dahlia will be happy.

Start these flower seeds indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the last anticipated frost, and set out 'Sunny Reggae' Dahlia when the soil has warmed in spring. Like all Dahlias from seed, it will grow a tuber during the season, which you can dig up and store for replanting next spring. So although 'Sunny Reggae' Dahlia is hardy only in zones 8-10, this plant can bloom for years in your garden. Make a special place for this award-winning showstopper.
