Angelonia Planting and Care Guide

Quick Facts About Angelonia

Angelonia is commonly called summer snapdragon. When snapdragons have stopped performing as the temperatures climb in the summer, Angelonia flowers will put on a show. Angelonia has stems filled with orchid-like flowers in severals colors - pinks, lavenders, whites, and mauves. The flowers have a sweet fragrance and are rich in nectar making them a favorite of pollinators.

Planting Time

Start Angelonia seeds indoors about 6 weeks prior to the end of frost season. The seeds are very small and difficult to handle, so our seeds have been pelleted for easier planting.

Planting Location

Grow Angelonia in full sun. Rich soil that has been amended with compost will provide the nutrients that are needed. The soil must drain well or root-rot may be a problem. Angelonia is well-suited for container growing.

How to Plant Angelonia

  • Fill trays with moistened seed starting soil
  • Light is needed for germination so do not cover the seeds but gently press them into the soil
  • Keep the seeds continually moist but not soggy - a mist from a squirt bottle daily will help keep the seeds moist
  • Place the trays in a bright window where the trays can be kept warm
  • Once the seedlings have developed true leaves and the temperatures are warm outdoors, harden off the seedlings for 7 - 10 days prior to transplanting out
  • Space the plants 6 - 8 inches apart
  • At the time of transplanting, pinch the growing tips back to promote more branching and a bushier growth

Care And Maintenance

  • Irrigate Angelonia regularly to help it establish - after establishment, Angelonia can withstand some drought so water when the top couple of inches of soil is dry
  • No deadheading is needed
  • If compost is added to the soil, no fertilizers are needed
  • Without compost, a balanced water soluable fertilizer can be used monthly
  • Angelonia is usually grown as an annual, but in cool climates, it can be brought indoors and wintered inside
