Kochia Planting Guide

Quick Facts About Kochia

Kochia is known for its distinct broom-like look and its capacity to transform into a deep red hue during autumn. This decorative grass can enhance the visual appeal of any garden.

Planting Time

Sow Burning Bush seeds indoors. Cultivate them in loam-based potting compost (No. 3) under full light and ensure proper ventilation. Water generously during growth stages and reduce watering in the winter. Once the risk of frost has dissipated, transplant them outdoors.

Planting Location

Thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, capable of thriving in various soil types, including those of poor quality.

How to Plant Kochia

  • If starting seeds indoors, start approximately 2 months before transplanting outdoors after danger of frost.
  • If starting directly outside, surface sow the seeds about 2 weeks before your last expected frost.
  • Plant 2 - 4 seeds per plant
  • Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting.
  • Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and gently press onto soil for good contact.
  • Keep seeds warm and moist until germination.
  • Transplant out into pots, containers, or directly in the garden, spacing about 24 - 36 apart.

Care And Maintenance

  • Once established Kochia plant members are easy to look after. They require frequent watering, and a few regular feeds of nitrogen containing fertilizer, in the summer.
  • Keep weeds in check throughout the growing season by cultivating regularly or using mulch. Weeds can deprive plants of water, space, and nutrients, so it's essential to manage them effectively to prevent their seeds from sprouting.
  • Mulches play a crucial role in preserving soil moisture and stabilizing soil temperatures.
