Cornflower (Centaurea Dealbata) - If you are a fan of cut flowers, you'll want to start these seeds and grow this perennial cousin to the common Bachelor's Button. Commonly called Persian Cornflower, this perennial has showy pink-lavender blooms on clump-forming drought tolerant plants. The plants are hardy and look great in the border and are especially attractive planted in a mass display. Care includes deadheading and possibly staking if the soil is rich. After blooming, the plants may be trimmed back to help maintain a compact habit. Even though it's a perennial, Cornflower dealbata will bloom the first year when started from flower seeds. Start the Centaurea seeds indoors in winter. Cover the pots or trays with clear plastic to ensure good humidity. Remove the plastic as soon as the sprouts emerge. Once plants are established they are perfect for xeriscape landscaping where water conservation is required.
