Gazania (Gazania Rigens New Day Rose Striped) - Perfect for a ground cover or in pots and baskets, Gazania grows easily from ground cover seed, and it's quickly loaded with colorful blooms that last all summer and fall. Known as Treasure Flower, this Gazania rose stripe boasts 4 inch cream flowers with a rose stripe on each petal, and the plants are compact, 8 - 10 inches tall with a 6 - 8 inch spread. As a ground cover plant, they quickly fill in open spaces to offer a lush display of blooms.
If growing Gazania seeds in colder climates, start the flower seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Treasure Flower seeds should be pressed into the soil but not covered and kept moist but not saturated until germination occurs. After germination of the flower seeds, reduce watering and grow seedlings in a sunny window location. For warm climates, start the Gazania seeds directly outdoors in a prepared seedbed. Space the ground cover seed 8 - 12 inches apart in the seedbed.
Gazania care includes deadheading the spent flowers to promote the growth of more blooms. Also, Gazania plants benefit from an application of a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season or mix in a slow-release fertilizer at the time of transplanting or preparing the seedbed. Water Gazania Treasure Flower plants slowly and deeply and let them dry out in-between waterings as they are quite drought tolerant. Applying an organic mulch around the base of the Gazania plants helps to hold moisture in.
Common Questions
Do gazania flowers close up at night?
The flowers are light-sensitive and don't open at night or on cloudy, overcast days.
Do I need to deadhead my gazania flowers?
If you don’t want them to self-seed you will want to deadhead. Deadheading will also encourage a longer bloom season.
Do gazanias come back every year?
Yes, gazanias are perennial and should come back every year in USDA zones 9-11, assuming the plant is healthy.
Can I encourage more blooms with gazania flowers?
Yes, make sure they are planted in enough sunlight and fertilize regularly during the bloom season. Do not allow the soil to dry out for too long if you want to keep your plants blooming.
