Trays or Plant in Ground:
First step is to determine which planting style works best for you, it may be a combination of both.
Trays are great for coups or pens that cannot be moved and you don't have space to rotate animals while chicken pasture seed is establishing.
Planting In Trays:
- 1. Fill tray(s) with planting soil and the nsow a generous amount of seed on top.
- 2. Cover lightly and press seeds into the soil
- 3. water regularly
- 4. Keep your tray(s) away from the birds until plants are 2 - 5 inches tall, or seeds will be eaten before germination.
- 5. When ready, set it down where your chickens can forage on the greens.
- 6. To keep the feast going, plant trays in alternating weeks so they can be rotated in and out.(li>
Planting in Yard or Runs:
- 1. Rake soil to loosen.
- 2. Sow seeds at 1 - 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
- 3. Rake seed and press into soil
- 4. Water regularly to keep soil moist but not puddling
- 5. Fence the area off to keep chickens or small animals out until seed has had a chance to establish. (li>6. When plants are 2 - 5 inches tall, remove fence and let them eat their fill.
Planting Time:
This will vary upon region. Guidelines are to plant in the spring after danger of frost though fall (approximately 6-8 weeks before frost for most species). Or, after everything is frozen for dormant seeding. Dormant seeding allows the seed to begin germination at the onset of warm weather. Either way, what you must avoid is having a frost occur AFTER the seed has germinated.
