Ice Plant (Dorotheanthus Bellidiformis Gelato White) - For an easy-to-care-for drought tolerant plant that thrives in the hot, dry soil, start Ice Plant seed. This white Ice Plant is a fast-spreading ground cover that is excellent for flower beds, spilling over the sides of containers or for xeriscape landscaping. Also known as Livingstone Daisy, this ground cover plant is free-flowering and will bloom all summer long with very low water usage. White Livingstone Daisy flowers are 1 1/2 inches across, and the plants are frost tender. In areas with frosts, grow Livingstone Daisy Ice Plant as an annual.
Sow Livingstone Daisy seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost. Or, sow Ice Plant ground cover seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed. If planting in trays, transplant when seedlings are 2 inches tall and space them 12 inches apart. Apply a slow-release fertilizer at the time of transplanting.
Common Questions
How quickly does ice plant spread?
Most ice plants have a quick and aggressive growth and spread rate.
Are plants toxic for my pets?
Ice plants are considered non-toxic for your pets.
My plants’ leaves are turning yellow, what do I do?
This is a sign of overwatering. Ice plants need soils that drain well, and you should allow plants to dry out between waterings. Excess moisture can weaken or kill your plants.
Do I need to deadhead my plants?
No, deadheading does not promote further blooming with ice plants.
Can I grow in containers?
Yes, ice plants do well in containers as long as you provide a well-draining potting mix. A thin layer of gravel placed over potting mix will help to keep your leaves dry as well.
