Dianthus (Dianthus Barbatus Pink Beauty) - Start these lovely additions to the garden from Dianthus flower seeds! Not only one of the most popular cut flowers, but also a must in borders, cottage gardens, or behind flowering ground covers. Most of the Dianthus Barbatus species are highly valued, not only for the beauty of their flowers, but also as being evergreens; their foliage, during winter, being as abundant and as vivid as in summer.
Like most Sweet Williams, Dianthus Pink Beauty grows and flowers best in full to part sun and average, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Avoid over watering and soggy conditions, as these may cause stem and root decay. Prompt removal of spent flower stems may encourage prolonged flowering. Plants may be divided every two to three years to maintain their vigor, and may politely self-sow if allowed to go to seed. Beautifully displayed with ground cover plants.
Sow Dianthus flower seeds indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost. Use sterile starter mix, and sow the Dianthus flower seeds on top, covering lightly with soil. Transplant seedlings outdoors after frost season has passed. For directly sowing Dianthus seed outdoors, wait until danger of frost is over, and directly sow the flower seeds into prepared beds. Lightly cover 1/16 inch and keep seeds moist.
