Dianthus (Dianthus Plumarius Spring Beauty) - Fragrant, fringed double and semi-double blooms in a range of pinks, reds and white, are wonderful reminders of old-fashioned English "cottage pinks or grass pinks". Dianthus Cottage Pinks establish well from flower seeds, and they work well for edging, in the front of the border, used as a ground cover plant, for rock gardens and to interplant in rock walls.
Dianthus Plumarius Spring Beauty prefer full sun in a cool climate. Most varieties if started early will bloom in the first year. Dianthus Spring Beauty will bloom in spring and early summer. Blooms are 1 - 2 inches in diameter. Deadheading spent flowers will promote a longer lasting bloom season.
Dianthus requires light and fast draining soils. The addition of lime can remedy overly acidic soils. Pinks are sensitive to over watering. In dry periods water once or twice a week. This Dianthus only grows 12 inches tall so it can be used as a ground cover plant.
Sow Dianthus Plumarius seed indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost. Use sterile starter mix, and sow the Dianthus seeds on top, covering lightly with soil. Transplant seedlings outdoors after frost season has passed. For directly sowing Dianthus ground cover seeds outdoors, wait until danger of frost is over, and directly sow Dianthus seeds into prepared beds. Lightly cover and keep seeds moist.
